ABOUT ME

Nikki Brooke is an Aussie sci-fi and fantasy author, scriptwriter, and champion of bisexual representation—because the world needs more bi heroes! She believes stories are better with a little chaos, a lot of heart, and characters who aren’t afraid to break the mould (or the universe). She writes the kind of books she always wanted to read growing up—where queerness is celebrated, the stakes are high, and the adventure is anything but ordinary.

Her debut novel Plagued Lands made a splash, winning first place in The BookFest’s Dystopian and YA Dystopian categories, snagging a Golden Wizard Book Prize, earning five shiny stars from Readers’ Favourite, and becoming an Aurealis Awards finalist for Best Young Adult Novel. Her second book, The Huxian Fox, was recently released and is already racking up its own credentials as a finalist in the Launch Pad Prose Competition, a semi-finalist in the ScreenCraft Cinematic Book Writing Competition, shortlisted for Adaptable by Queensland Writers Centre, and #1 Sci-Fi Book/Manuscript on Coverfly’s Red List.

She grew up in Melbourne but has lived in London and Austin before boomeranging back home, where she now lives with two dogs named Osiris and Apollo. Yes, like the gods. Yes, they know it. Yes, they act accordingly. When she’s not writing or refereeing divine dog drama, Nikki enjoys swimming, dancing, butchering Spanish, and having grand adventures around the world.

Usually they just pop into my head. I have always loved stories and daydreaming and overthinking. All that coupled with an overactive imagination is bound to come up with a few tales. Most of those tales don’t ever become a story and I forget them almost as quickly as I thought of them. Sometimes my ideas are just extensions of my own life, like how a conversation might play out, or how my life would be if I’d made a different choice or never met my friends. I’m sometimes inspired by other writers, sometimes it’s my friends and family, other times I use writing prompts (there are loads online), and I also get ideas from breakthroughs in science.

I have so many favourites, but my all-time favourite novel is Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. It was the first story (book, tv show or movie) that ever made me cry. It had the power to move me in a way I’d never experienced before. It was this book that made me become a bookworm and solidified my dream to write. And for that it will always have a place in my heart.

Impossible! I could never choose only one. Some of my favourites are Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff, Sherryl Jordan, Matthew Reilly, John Marsden, Claudia Gray, and Suzanne Collins.
